Yesterday I went to Kawran Bazar for purchasing some fish for my mass. Oh! I should mention here that I live in a mass in the city. And here in the mass everyday bazar routine is maintained. In the Thursday I do my bazar for the mass members.

This days mistakes

Its after a long days I am writing on my blog. I dont get much time to come on the internet and get witting something for my readers. I always try to write something.

Once it was my regular practice to write on the blogs. ya... the 's' :D

I was used to write on several blogs. One of them I should mention here is the AmarBlog.com

This was really a good blog before 3-4 years ago for me. Now I don't like it. I don't know why or don't want to mention the reasons. This is a famous Bengali Blog Platform.

However... the title I have used today is "This days mistakes". Now, when I started writing the blog after a long time I already written 2 para. Forgot to write on the main topic on which I intended to write. ya, you write. This day's I continuously forgetting my jobs.

Today I also made a great mistake in my exam. This is Principles of Taxation & Zakat. I was calculating the "Income from Interest on Securities". In this part the entry "Less Tax Govt. Securities" I need to make the Grossing Up. That means when I get the interest from that securities the payer deduct the 10% of income . This is called the TDS (Tax Deducted @ source)

But while we show our income we need to show the gross amount. That means the 100% of my income. Not only the 90%.

I made this mistake too.

In the last exam., Operations Management, I made such a mistake too. But this was too simple then this.

Can u calculate the 108+7.21*4.5 ? I made mistake on this pretty simple calculation :(

I don't know what is waiting for me in the coming days. Pray for me.

Facebook Launches Skype-Powered Video Calling

Facebook has just announced a major new feature that it’s launching in tandem with Skype: video calling.

It’s a feature that’s been rumored for quite a while, and it’s one that Facebook is putting a lot of weight behind. Now, whenever you browse to a friend’s profile, you’ll see a new button nestled between the ‘Message’ and ‘Poke’ buttons that says ‘Call’. Click that, the other user will see a popup asking if they want to accept a call, and you’ll be immediately connected (you’ll need to install a small plugin the first time you use the service).

You’ll also see video calling integrated into Facebook’s Chat product. Really, you can’t miss it — Facebook is launching a new chat sidebar today that by default it takes the entire right side of the screen, and the first time you click on any user you’ll see a prompt asking if you’d like to make your first video call. If you try to initiate a video call and the other user doesn’t respond, you’ll be prompted to send them a video message.

So why is this a big deal? Facebook emphasized the fact that users will not have to create new Skype accounts to make calls, and that this will allow users to call their friends and family with a very minimal amount of setup (the flow for installing the applet only took a few seconds).

Of course, this comes just a week after the launch of Google+, which includes a video chat feature called ‘Hangouts’. Facebook’s video chat doesn’t support group chats yet, but when asked if Facebook will be rolling out group video calling, Zuckerberg said not to rule anything out. He added that one-to-one calling makes up the vast majority of video calling.

Skype CEO Tony Bates took the stage to make a few comments. One important thing he noted: Skype is talking with Facebook about having some paid products available through the web format.

Update: Facebook engineer Philip Su has just published some notes on how the team built the feature.

He writes that Facebook is using different techniques to install the Skype plugin depending on what browser you’re using to help streamline the experience:

Installation Flows for Each Browser and OS
To make installation as easy as possible, we specifically customized the installation flow for each OS and browser combination. For instance, on Mac browsers with Java enabled, the installer is hosted entirely within the browser so that no additional clicks are required. We use a small bootstrap EXE in Windows browsers to minimize the initial download time and to manage installation permissions as seamlessly as possible. We also put the entire installation flow inline with the feature itself, instead of requiring a separate download and installation page, so that your call automatically continues once installation completes.

Also very cool: Facebook users are using Skype’s service anonymously.

Protecting User Identity
To ensure that you can make a call without needing a separate Skype account, Facebook connects to Skype’s secure REST APIs using encrypted user IDs to set up the necessary credentials. This opens up the possibility of video calling to users who might never have used Skype before, and makes the overall calling experience much simpler for everyone. While it would have been easier to give user IDs directly to Skype, we instead went to great lengths to make sure users are protected and anonymous on Skype’s service.

143 schools under scanner

The government is investigating 143 schools in the capital that it believes asked for more free textbooks than they needed.

Strict measures, including suspension of headmasters if the school is a government one, will be taken against those guilty, National Curriculum and Textbook Board officials said on Monday.

Several schools have already been found at fault, said Ratan Siddique, the official in charge of distributing free textbooks.

"41 schools have been checked until Monday," he said and added that some had been told to return the excess books.

At Pragati High School at Pallabi, he found that they had asked for 293 sets of books for class seven, 119 more than the number of students in that class.

Siddique feared the excess books were taken for sale in the market.

"The police will conduct a drive from Dec 31 to ensure such this does not happen."

He warned that if the guilty schools did not return the excess books by Jan 7, the government will take tough measures.

"Registration and inclusion in the MPO (Monthly Pay Order) will be cancelled," he said.

Siddique suspected another 400,000 excess books had gone across the country and promised steps to recover them at the divisional and district level.

DEMAND AFTER DEADLINE

Even though all schools were told to submit their demands for free textbooks by March, 119 new schools requisitioned for 117,000 new textbooks for classes six to nine.

Ratan said they will look into the reasons for demanding books beyond the deadline.

"However, we will provide them with books from the buffer stock," he added.

According to Board regulations, 15 percent of primary and five percent of secondary books are buffer stocked.

বাংলা বই কম, তাই পালা করে পড়া

বাংলা বই পড়া নিয়ে বিপাকে পড়েছে তারা। কারণ, সরকার থেকে সরবরাহ করা নতুন বাংলা বই খুব কম শিক্ষার্থী পেয়েছে। যারা পেয়েছে, তাদের বই নিয়ে চলছে অন্য সহপাঠীদের টানাহেঁচড়া। সামনে প্রথম সাময়িক পরীক্ষা, তাই পালা করে পড়তে হচ্ছে তাদের। এই দুরবস্থায় পড়েছে রাজশাহীর পুঠিয়া উপজেলার ৭৬টি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীর শিক্ষার্থীরা। কিছু বিদ্যালয়ে পুরোনো ও ছেঁড়া বাংলা বই দিয়ে শিক্ষকেরা এ সমস্যা উতরানোর চেষ্টা করছেন।
পুঠিয়ার বিভিন্ন শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানে খোঁজ নিয়ে জানা গেছে, উপজেলার ৮৭টি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের মধ্যে মাত্র ১১টি বিদ্যালয়ের দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীর সব শিক্ষার্থী বাংলা বই পেয়েছে। উপজেলার বিভিন্ন বিদ্যালয়ে প্রথম শ্রেণীরও সব বই নেই। অন্যান্য শ্রেণীর শিক্ষার্থীরা সব বই পেলেও অনেক বইয়ের ভেতর পাতা নেই। এর মধ্যে পঞ্চম শ্রেণীর বাংলা, পরিবেশ পরিচিতি সমাজ, চতুর্থ শ্রেণীর বাংলা, সমাজ ও বিজ্ঞান, তৃতীয় শ্রেণীর বাংলা, দ্বিতীয় ও প্রথম শ্রেণীর গণিত বইয়ে এ সমস্যা বেশি। তৃতীয় শ্রেণীর বাংলা বইয়ে ৪০ থেকে ৫৬ পৃষ্ঠা পর্যন্ত কোনো পাতা নেই।
গত ২৫ মার্চ উপজেলার চকপালাশি রেজিস্টার্ড বেসরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ে গিয়ে দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীর শিক্ষার্থীদের সঙ্গে কথা বলে জানা যায়, ৪০ জনের মধ্যে তারা মাত্র তিনজন বাংলা বই পেয়েছে। এই তিনটি বই তারা পালা করে পড়ে। ক্লাসে যখন শিক্ষক আসেন, তখন তারা গোল হয়ে বসে কয়েকজন মিলে একটি বই পড়ে। আবার শিক্ষক ব্ল্যাকবোর্ডে লিখে দিলে, তারা খাতায় তুলে বাড়িতে গিয়ে তা পড়ে। ক্লাসের শিক্ষার্থী নাজমুল হোসেনের ভাষ্য, ‘আমার কাছে পাঁচ দিন বাংলা বই ছিল। এখন আছে তা আরেকজনের কাছে। স্কুলে গেলেই শুধু ওই বই পড়ার সুযোগ পাই।’
শিক্ষার্থী কুলসুম বলে, ‘বাংলা বইটি বাড়ি নিয়ে যাওয়ার ব্যাপারে এখনো আমার পালা আসেনি। বইটি এখন কারিমা নামে একজন সহপাঠীর কাছে আছে। সে আজ আসেনি। তাই বাংলা পড়া হচ্ছে না।’ বিদ্যালয়ের প্রধান শিক্ষক মো. জসিম উদ্দিন বলেন, আমরা পুরোনো বইগুলো শিক্ষার্থীদের দিয়েছি। তারা সেগুলো পালা করে পড়ছে। আশা করি, পরীক্ষার আগেই বই পেয়ে যাব।
উপজেলার দমদমা সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীতে রয়েছে ৫৩ জন শিক্ষার্থী। এর মধ্যে প্রায় ৩০ জন শিক্ষার্থী পুরোনো ছেঁড়া বই পেয়েছে। অন্যরা বই থেকে ব্ল্যাকবোর্ডে লেখা পাঠ খাতায় তুলে নিয়ে পড়ছে। নাম না প্রকাশ করার শর্তে বিদ্যালয়ের একজন শিক্ষক জানান, নতুন বই পাওয়ার আশায় প্রথম দুই মাস তাঁরা বই ছাড়াই ক্লাস নিয়েছেন। পরে সংশ্লিষ্ট সূত্রে জানতে পারেন, নতুন বই পাওয়ার সম্ভাবনা খুব কম। তারপর তাঁরা কিছু পুরোনো বই বেছে কয়েকজন শিক্ষার্থীর হাতে তুলে দেন। তিনি বলেন, দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীতেই শিশু শিক্ষার্থীদের পঠনপাঠন ও উচ্চারণ শেখার ভিত তৈরি হয়। এ সময় তাদের হাতে বই না থাকলে শুধু ব্ল্যাকবোর্ডের মাধ্যমে ধারণা দেওয়া যায় না।
বিদ্যালয়ের প্রধান শিক্ষক মো. আবুল হোসেন বলেন, উপজেলায় বইয়ের সরবরাহ নেই। বই এলেই আমরা পেয়ে যাব। তিনি বলেন, কিছু পুরোনো বই বাচ্চাদের দিয়েছি, তারা এসব বই পাশাপাশি বসে পড়ে।
উপজেলার ধোপাপাড়া সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীর শিক্ষার্থী ৮৯ জন। তারা কেউই বাংলা বই পায়নি। বিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষকেরা তাদের যে কয়টি পুরোনো ছেঁড়া বই দিয়েছেন, তাই তারা পালা করে পড়ছে। অথচ আগামী ১৫ এপ্রিল থেকে শুরু হচ্ছে তাদের প্রথম সাময়িক পরীক্ষা।
এ ব্যাপারে রাজশাহী জেলা প্রাথমিক শিক্ষা কর্মকর্তা আবদুল কাদের বলেন, ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে এসব বইয়ের ব্যাপারে তাঁরা চাহিদা দিয়েছিলেন। ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্মকর্তারা জানান, নাটোরে দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীর বাংলা বই উদ্বৃত্ত আছে। সেখান থেকে বই জোগাড় করতে বলেন তাঁরা। কিন্তু সেখানে গিয়েও একই সমস্যা দেখা যায়। তিনি বলেন, প্রতি বছরই পুরোনো কিছু বই দিয়ে সমস্যা সমাধানের চেষ্টা করা হয়। কিন্তু পাঠ্যসূচি পরিবর্তন হওয়ায় এবার পুরোনো বই দিয়ে সমস্যার সমাধান করা যাচ্ছে না। বিভিন্ন বইয়ের পাতা না থাকার ব্যাপারে তিনি বলেন, এ ধরনের বইয়ের নমুনাসহ একটি তালিকা পাঠানো হয়েছে। শিগগিরই এসব সমস্যার সমাধান হবে বলে তিনি আশা প্রকাশ করেন।

মুক্ত অর্থাত্ ওপেন সোর্স সফটওয়্যার বলতে ইন্টারনেট থেকে বিনামূল্যে নামিয়ে কম্পিউটারে ব্যবহার করা যাবে।

আসলে সত্যটা হলো
মুক্ত সফটওয়্যারের ধারণাটি এমন নয়। এটি ঠিক যে মুক্ত সফটওয়্যারগুলোর অধিকাংশই বিনামূল্যে পাওয়া যায়। তবে কখনোই বাধ্যতামূলক নয় যে মুক্ত হলেই সেটি বিনামূল্যে পাওয়া যাবে বা বিনামূল্যে পাওয়া সব সফটওয়্যারই মুক্ত।সাধারণত মুক্ত সফটওয়্যারগুলো সাধারণ কোনো ব্যক্তি বা প্রতিষ্ঠান তৈরি করে এসবের প্রোগ্রামিং সংকেত (সোর্সকোড) উন্মুক্ত করে দেয়। ফলে তখন যে কেউ সফটওয়্যারটির উন্নয়নে যুক্ত হতে পারে। মুক্ত সফটওয়্যারের একটি জনপ্রিয় লাইসেন্স হলো জিপিএল (জিএনইউ জেনারেল পাবলিক লাইসেন্স)। স্বত্ব ত্যাগ করে প্রকাশের এই লাইসেন্সে সফটওয়্যারটিতে নির্মাতার অধিকার থাকলেও যে কেউ এটি সম্পাদনার অধিকার রাখে। এভাবে যদি সফটওয়্যার মুক্ত হিসেবে ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়, তবে এর নির্মাতারা কখনোই আর্থিকভাবে লাভবান হতে পারবেন না বলে মনে হতে পারে। কিন্তু যেসব প্রতিষ্ঠান বাণিজ্যিকভাবে মুক্ত সফটওয়্যার তৈরি করে, তারা অন্য লাইসেন্সের অধীনেও সফটওয়্যার প্রকাশ করে থাকে।যেন সেটি বিক্রি করে আর্থিকভাবে লাভবান হওয়া যায়।

লিনাক্স অপারেটিং সিস্টেম ব্যবহার করতে গিয়ে বিভিন্ন অসুবিধার সম্মুখীন হতে হয় এবং যেহেতু সবাই কম্পিউটার প্রোগ্রামার বা সফটওয়্যার প্রকৌশলী নন, তাই লিনাক্স ব্যবহার করা উচিত নয়।

আসলে সত্যটা হলো
একেবারে প্রথম দিকের লিনাক্সগুলোর ক্ষেত্রে এটি সত্য হয়ে থাকলেও এখনকার লিনাক্সের ব্যবহার পদ্ধতি উইন্ডোজ বা অ্যাপল ম্যাক অপারেটিং সিস্টেমের মতোই সহজ। উদাহরণ হিসেবে ‘উবুন্টু’ বা ‘লিনাক্স মিন্ট’-এর কথা বলা যায়, যেখানে সাধারণ সব কাজই করা যায় অত্যন্ত সহজে এবং এর জন্য কম্পিউটার বিজ্ঞানের উচ্চতর কোনো ডিগ্রির প্রয়োজন হয় না। আর যেকোনো ধরনের সমস্যার জন্য মুক্ত সফটওয়্যার ব্যবহার ও উন্নয়নকারীদের নানা রকম দল থেকে সাহায্য পাওয়া যায়।

যেকোনো চলমান প্রতিষ্ঠান হঠাত্ করে মুক্ত সফটওয়্যার ব্যবহার শুরু করতে চাইলে সেখানকার তথ্যপ্রযুক্তিকর্মীদের প্রশিক্ষণ বাবদ কিছু অতিরিক্ত খরচ হতে পারে। তবে নতুন শুরু করছে এমন প্রতিষ্ঠান শুরুতেই অভিজ্ঞদের নিয়োগ দিয়ে সেই সমস্যা সমাধান করতে পারে। অন্যান্য অপারেটিং সিস্টেম যেখানে কম্পিউটার ভাইরাসের আক্রমণেকাহিল, সেখানে মুক্ত অপারেটিং সিস্টেম ভাইরাস বা ওয়ার্মে সহজে আক্রান্ত হয় না।গঠন পদ্ধতির বিশেষত্বের জন্য এটি অধিক সুরক্ষিত।

An enterprising graduate student from Bangladesh could be possibly pulling the rug out from under the robotics community with a pet-project he's been working on. According to reports, Feroz Ahmed Siddique of the International Islamic University in Chittagong says he's created a bot that -- when complete -- will pick up objects, mop floors, and perform other simple tasks. The robot, un-creatively named "IRobo" supposedly responds to voice commands, has spatial intelligence, and was made from scrap parts found at electronic and auto shops. "On completion, this robot will comply with different verbal commands for tasks like shifting objects, cleaning floors and standing guard," Siddique says, adding, "I hope people will be able to buy it for less than $1,000." Apparently, the student of engineering has been working on the robot for two years, and is already in talks with an Australian software company about production. Sure, it seems to just be a giant RC car, but soon we may all be getting our floors mopped by the IRobo... hopefully they'll get him a new helmet first. বসুন্ধরার অগ্নিকাণ্ডের লেলিহান শিখা পোড়াতে পারেনি মহাপবিত্র গ্রন্থ আল কোরআন। গতকাল ভস্মীভূত ছাইয়ের স্তূপ সরানোর সময় সম্পূর্ণ অক্ষত অবস্থায় ১৮ তলা থেকে এ পবিত্র গ্রন্থটি উদ্ধার করা হয়েছে। বসুন্ধরা কর্পোরেট অফিসের ১৭, ১৮ ও ১৯ তলার সবকিছুই পুড়ে ছাই হয়ে গেছে। গত কয়েকদিন ধরে এসব ময়লা সরানো হচ্ছে। গতকালও এ কার্যক্রম চলছিল। একপর্যায়ে ছাইয়ের স্তূপের ভেতর থেকে অক্ষত অবস্থায় একটি কোরআন শরীফ উদ্ধার করা হয়। বসুন্ধরার সহকারী মহাব্যবস্থাপক এম জেড হোসেন আরজু জানান, আগুনের তাপে কোরআন শরীফের একধারের সাদা অংশ কিছুটা কালচে দাগ হয়েছে। তবে লেখার কোনো ক্ষতি হয়নি।

Apparent rebellion hits Bangladesh force

An intense gunbattle broke out Wednesday morning inside the headquarters of Bangladesh's border security force in the capital, Dhaka, after several security personnel apparently staged a rebellion against the head of the force, officials said.

It was not immediately clear whether the gunfire resulted in casualties, the country's information ministry said.

The director general of the Bangladesh Rifles, Maj. Shakil Ahmed, was conducting a roll call inside the force's headquarters when the gunfire began, the ministry said.

"It's a serious, serious incident," said Mohammed Sajjad Haider, spokesman for the ministry. "Some soldiers have decided to rebel. The gunfire coming from inside is so heavy that no one has been able to go inside."

Several officers were trapped inside and their mobile phones were turned off, Haider said. "So it's making it very difficult for us to get information on exactly what is going on right now."

The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) is a paramilitary force, responsible for primarily guarding the country's borders. The force, more than 65,000-strong, also takes part in other operations, such as monitoring polls.

The force's headquarters are in Dhaka, but it has several outposts along the borders.

There are various ways to get a lot of traffic. Some do so buying traffic from google adwords and then use it to promote various products. Such method is called arbitrage. The best one that is doing it is Steven.

Then there are people that creates lots and lots of blogs and then promote some affiliates there. Rob Benwell is the authority for that sort of thing.

Then we convert traffics into cash. The easiest way to do so is to find the best affiliate programs that match our need. For starter, I would recommend clickbank.

Some ways to make money online do not fit the pattern, however.

For example, Marcus Leary build an autopilot system to predict forex. He then leave the machine running and turn a measly $3000 investment into hundreds of thousands of dollars. He’s selling his program at his site.

I’m sorry, but this is just dumb! Two Indonesian men got really excited about answering a government job offer. A text message was sent telling the village chief, who was helping the men find jobs, that positions were available for intelligence officers, but they would first need to get a dragon tattoo on their faces. No one realized that this might not be 100% accurate until it was too late. Turns out it was a hoax. Now the men are seeking help to have the ink removed from their faces. Believe It or Not!

There is a lot of debate among Muslims as to whether or not it is required for a Muslim woman to cover her face and hands in addition to the rest of her body when appearing in public or in front of non-Mahrem men. The purpose of this article is not to fall on either side of that debate, but to urge all Muslims to show respect for sisters who have chosen to wear either the khimar (full face covering) or the niqab (face covering which leaves the eyes exposed.) Some Muslims give these sisters a hard time, saying that they are doing above and beyond what has been commanded by Allah SWT, and that the "extreme" appearance of these fully-veiled women projects a bad image to the non-Muslims who already view the Muslim woman as weak and oppressed. They argue that such individuals, upon seeing fully-veiled Muslim women, will be "turned off" by "Islam, and we will have forever lost potential Muslim converts, or even the understanding and sympathy of the non-Muslim community.

Think about it carefully: would we ever think of criticizing a Muslim who fasts extra days outside of "Ramadan? Do we belittle the Muslims whose prayers exceed the prescribed daily five? Are we upset when Muslims give more zakat than required by Islamic Law? Of course not. We admire such people for their apparent dedication to Allah SWT, just as we should admire Muslim women who cover their faces for the same reason. Whether they veil because they take the so-called "most-conservative" viewpoint that covering the face is a requirement of Islamic Law, or because they simply believe that they will earn extra reward from our Lord and Creator for doing something more. Praise be to Allah, veiled women are engaged in halal, and that is the bottom line.

As for the question of non-Muslims being "turned off" by Islam upon seeing fully-veiled Muslim women, Muslims should not waste time and energy worrying about such matters. To the contrary, some non-Muslims are not critical of the face-veil at all and are so intrigued by it that they actually become interested in Islam as a direct result of seeing fully covered Muslim women.

One non-Muslim woman wrote about her impressions of the face-veil in our local newspaper after crossing paths with a veiled woman on a busy city street. The writer was struck by the confidence with which the Muslim woman walked, seeing all that was around her, but not being seen by others, secure in the knowledge that no man could make a lewd comment to her about her shapeless body and invisible face. She confessed a twinge of jealousy as she contemplated her own short skirt and tight blouse, realizing in a split second that, no matter how much she tried to convince herself otherwise, society's men were probably not judging her solely for her intellectual and professional capabilities. She now felt embarassed in front of the Muslim woman who must've, she imagined, felt somewhat sorry for a "liberated" western woman like herself who could not even make it from one end of the street to the other without fear of harassment. (Please note that these were the writer's own sentiments and my intention is not to put her down but to show that there is more to equal rights than rules and regulations: it also has to do with belief, mindset and the reality of how men and women interact with one another as opposed to how we think they should in a perfect world.)

Contrast this powerful piece of writing to an article authored by a Muslim woman in another newspaper. In it, the woman practically begged non-Muslims not to judge Islam by the face-veil, which, she claimed, is a mere cultural tradition having nothing to do with Islam. This article served to divide local Muslims into two camps, understandably upsetting veiled women and their families. Even if one wanted to take the "least-least conservative" point of view and say that the veil is nothing more than a cultural tradition, it should not be forgotten that such a tradition has sprung forth from a culture of Muslims who are seeking the reward and pleasure of Allah, Most High. We should, in fact, respect the sisters who, in spite of the intense scrutiny placed upon them by Muslims and non-Muslims alike, continue to veil, refusing to abandon a halal garment which provides them (and the community as a whole) with extra doses of security, honor and pride.

Islam is a light that Allah SWT puts into one's heart, and He will undoubtedly help those sincere individuals who are seeking the Straight Path to get there one way or another. It really has nothing to do with what people "think about Islam." One of the best things we can do as Muslims is to behave well, dealing with people kindly and fairly, remembering that it is ultimately up to the will of Allah, Most Glorious if a particular individual is to become a Muslim or not. We should never think that we have to change the good things about ourselves in order to attract new converts to Islam. This strategy is not only demoralizing to one's iman, but it also does not work.

In conclusion, I would like to note that I do not wear the face-veil myself (only the basic hijab) but that I do have enormous respect for the women who cover their faces. I was prompted to write this article after hearing from many of my fully-veiled sisters in faith that some of the harshest criticisms they receive are from within the American Muslim community itself and not from non-Muslims as they had anticipated before adopting the veil. I really think that all Muslims should realize how much courage and confidence it takes to veil one's self in modern-day America and that we should be their best supporters in the struggle for the Muslim woman's right to veil.

Blast hits Thai government house !!!

A grenade explosion has injured 46 people inside the opposition-occupied government house in the Thai capital Bangkok, emergency services say.
The blast came as the authorities were trying to end a blockade of Bangkok's two main airports by People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters.
The protesters are demanding the prime minister's sacking and have occupied government house since August.
A grenade attack there last Saturday injured eight of them.
Suriyasai Katasila, a PAD spokesman, said the grenade had gone off just after midnight (1700 GMT), 300m (yards) from the stage in the government house compound.
"Protesters have returned to their positions, they are not scared," he told Thailand's Channel Three television.
Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, seen by the protesters as an ally of exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has refused to resign in the face of the protests.
The PAD - a loose alliance of royalists, businessmen and the urban middle class - say the government is corrupt and hostile to the monarchy.
The blockade of Bangkok's two main airports has entered its sixth day but the protesters say they will not leave until the prime minister quits.
Protesters attacked two checkpoints near the main airport, Suvarnabhumi international, on Saturday, forcing police to retreat.
A few hundred police on duty are no match for the thousands of protesters, the BBC's Quentin Sommerville reports from Bangkok.
The prime minister has staked his government's reputation on ending the occupation.
The army are against him and his grip on power appears to be slipping, our correspondent says, as tens of thousands of stranded travellers are running short on cash and short of patience.
The government has started commercial services from a nearby military base but the waiting list for flights runs into weeks.

UCLA gerontologist Dr. Stephen Coles said Parker's great-nephew notified him that Parker died Wednesday at a nursing home in Shelbyville. She was 115 years, 220 days old, said Robert Young, a senior consultant for gerontology for Guinness World Records.

Parker was born April 20, 1893, in central Indiana's Morgan County and had been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person since the 2007 death in Japan of Yone Minagawa, who was four months her senior.

Coles maintains a list of the world's oldest people and said Parker was the 14th oldest validated supercentenarian in history. Maria de Jesus of Portugal, who was born Sept. 10, 1893, is now the world's oldest living person, according to the Gerontology Research Group.

Parker had been a widow since her husband, Earl Parker, died in 1939 of a heart attack. She lived alone in their farmhouse until age 100, when she moved into a son's home and later to the Shelbyville nursing home.

Although she never drank alcohol or tried tobacco and led an active life, Parker didn't offer tips for living a long life. Her only advice to those who gathered to celebrate when she became the oldest person was "more education."

Parker outlived her two sons, Clifford and Earl Jr. She also had five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Don Parker, 60, said his grandmother had a small frame and a mild temperament. She walked a lot and kept busy even after moving into the nursing home, he said.

"She kept active," he said Thursday. "We used to go up there, and she would be pushing other patients in their wheelchairs."

Gov. Mitch Daniels celebrated with Parker on her 114th birthday.

"It was a delight to know Edna, who must have been a remarkable lady at any age," Daniels said.

Parker taught in a two-room school in Shelby County for several years after graduating from Franklin College in 1911. She wed her childhood sweetheart and neighbor in 1913.

But as was the tradition of that era, her teaching career ended with her marriage. Parker traded the schoolhouse for life as a farmer's wife, preparing meals for as many as a dozen men who worked on her husband's farm.

Parker noted with pride last year that she and her husband were one of the first owners of an automobile in their rural area.

Coincidentally, Parker lived in the same nursing home as 7-foot-7 Sandy Allen, whom Guinness recognized as the world's tallest woman until her death in August.

Israel re-imposes Gaza blockade

Israel has re-imposed its blockade of the Gaza Strip following a rocket attack from the region.

Crossings were due to open temporarily at 9am GMT on Thursday but Israeli officials said they would remain closed after two rockets were fired.

Only eight trucks containing humanitarian aid were allowed to enter the Hamas-controlled area of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

One of the trucks held aid from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and three others were from the World Food Programme.

Trucks were to enter the region to provide essential supplies of food and fuel for the third time in three weeks.

Both sides have blamed each other of breaking the five-month ceasefire that led to Israel's imposition of the blockade, which is causing a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The borders with Israel had been opened on Monday and about 45 lorries were allowed through the Kerem Shalom crossing, including 10 UN vehicles carrying food and medical supplies.

Another 15 truckloads of supplies were let through the Karni crossing with an unspecified number also passing via the Nahal Ouz opening.

Limited supplies

Humanitarian agencies have said that the supplies are reaching the Gaza Strip are not enough to sustain the population.

A lack of fuel for Gaza's power plants and limited medical supplies have put hospitals at serious risk of being rendered useless.

The UN has said that the blockade is a "direct contravention of international human rights and humanitarian law" and should be ended immediately.

Israel closed all of its crossings with Gaza on November 5 following rocket attacks launched by Palestinian fighters within the Strip and has refused to lift the blockade until the attacks end.

A Palestinian official said the Israelis agreed to temporarily lift the blockade after Egyptian mediators intervened, asking Israel to let in essential humanitarian supplies while calling on Palestinian fighters to simultaneously stop rocket fire.

Several Israelis have been injured by Palestinian rocket fire in the past couple of weeks.

Zimbabwean cholera deaths rise

The UN said on Tuesday that morre than 50 people died of cholera in Zimbabwe during the previous day alone.

The fatalities bring the total number of cholera deaths to 366 since August, with the majority in the past two weeks.

In response to calls for government to declare a national health emergency, Edwin Muguti, the deputy health minister, said on Wednesday: "The situation is under control. There is no need to declare it."

However, many reports accuse President Robert Mugabe of silencing health workers and preventing access to death records, thus reducing the official mortality figures for the water-borne disease.

About 200 Zimbabweans have been treated for the disease at the South African border town of Musina in the past two weeks.

Another 1,000 people have been provided with life-saving rehydration treatment at the health facility there.

'Unreported cases'

The UN said that 8,887 cases of the disease have been recorded across half of Zimbabwe.

The Independent, a British newspaper, quoted a senior official in the health ministry as saying that more than 3,000 people had fallen victim to the disease.

Dr Douglas Gwadziro, the chairman of Doctors for Human Rights, a Zimbabwean group, said on Tuesday that about 10 per cent of people contracting the disease die.

Gwadziro said that those dying at home may not be recorded.

Cholera is spread by water containing human faeces. Zimbabwe's sewerage system has broken down in many areas and access to clean water is proving increasingly difficult to come by, if at all accessible, in the past two weeks.

Hospitals closing

The country's health system has also collapsed, with some hospitals closing due to lack of finance, and many people have gone without treatment.

As the rainy season approaches the disease may become more widespread. Rain is already moving raw sewage into water supplies in Harare, the capital.

Poor sewage treatment and water purification are being blamed for the outbreak in Zimbabwe.

These need to be reversed to contain the infection.

The disease is the latest in a litany of crises faced by Zimbabwean citizens under Mugabe's increasingly dictatorial rule.

For most of this year the south-east African nation has suffered a political deadlock, with a post-election power-sharing deal between Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai, the opposition leader, failing to be ratified.

Official inflation is at 231 million per cent, although the real rate is higher, pushing the price of the most basic provisions out of many people's reach.

Mumbai rocked by deadly attacks

Gunmen have carried out a series of co-ordinated attacks across the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing at least 80 people and injuring 200 more.

At least seven high-profile locations were hit in India's financial capital, including two luxury hotels where hostages were reported to be held.

A fire is sweeping through the Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai's most famous hotel, which is now ringed by troops.

Police said four suspected terrorists have been killed and nine arrested.

The situation is still confused but the city's main train station, a hospital, a restaurant and two hotels - locations used by foreigners as well as local businessmen and leaders - are among those places caught up in the violence.

There are reports of gunfire and explosions taking place elsewhere in the city, and reports of a hostage situation at a hospital.

Commandos have now surrounded the two hotels, the Taj Mahal Palace and the Oberoi Trident, where it is believed that the armed men are holding dozens of hostages.

One eyewitness said that the attackers had singled out British and American passport holders.

If this report is true, our security correspondent Frank Gardner says it implies an Islamist motive - attacks inspired or co-ordinated by al-Qaeda.

A claim of responsibility has been made by a previously unknown group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen.

Our correspondent says it could be a hoax or assumed name for another group.

Gunmen opened fire at about 2300 local time (1730 GMT) at the sites in southern Mumbai.

Local TV images showed blood-splattered streets, bodies being taken into ambulances and dramatic shots of what appeared to explosions and fire inside the Taj Mahal hotel.

One eyewitness told the BBC he had seen a gunman opening fire in the Taj Mahal's lobby.

Doubts hang over landmark Bangladeshi elections

The prospect of Bangladesh holding its first democratic elections in seven years hung in the balance Thursday after the government refused to meet demands from a key party.

The elections are planned for December 18, but one of the country's two main political camps, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies, says it needs more time.

BNP leader and former prime minister Khaleda Zia said late Thursday she would take part in the polls only if the government delayed them by 10 days.

"I clearly see that we will take part in elections on December 28 to restore democracy and to establish the basic rights of the people," said Zia, whose party has threatened to boycott the polls.

She also urged the government to lift the state of emergency, imposed almost two years ago, from Sunday, when nominations for the elections close, and said the army should stay out of the political process.

Her comments came after the government this week held crisis talks with BNP and its rival, the left-leaning Awami League party, to try to negotiate a compromise.

Government minister Hussain Zillur Rahman said late Wednesday the two sides had failed to reach a consensus in the talks, and that the elections would therefore go ahead according to the original schedule.

The government did however postpone the cut-off date for candidate nominations from November 20 to November 23, giving it more time to negotiate with the BNP.

The head of the election commission described Zia's comments Thursday as positive, and said his team would meet her on Friday.

Bangladesh's army-backed government, in power since January 2007 after a row over election fraud between the BNP and the Awami League led to widespread unrest, has promised to restore democracy by the end of the year.

Dhaka University political science professor Ataur Rahman predicted the BNP and its allies would boycott the polls, meaning they would not be credible.

"In Bangladeshi politics you have to save face. If you say something, you have to stick to it," he said, referring to the BNP.

"The government, on the other hand, has no face to save. They have conceded too much and it seems they cannot deliver an acceptable election. They have been outsmarted by the political parties."

Rahman said there was still a chance the election, the first national polls in seven years in Bangladesh, would be delayed by 10 days.

Political analyst Golam Hossain, who teaches at Jahangirnagar University, said the international community or the army needed to step in to sort out the stalemate and get both parties to participate.

"Our only hope for credible elections to go ahead now is that external forces, either the army or international friends, intervene," he said.

"Without the BNP (taking part) there will be a lot of problems after the election."

French ambassador to Bangladesh Charley Causeret told reporters Thursday that elections should be held as soon as possible.

"We don't interfere in domestic affairs but what I can say is that the sooner these general elections are held the better for Bangladeshi democracy and governance," he said.

Over the past two years the government has pushed through key electoral and political reforms, including a crackdown on corruption, which saw both Zia and Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina Wajed detained for a year on graft charges.

Both women have been released on bail in deals with the government to ensure they take part in the elections.

India chases China to moon

India launched its first unmanned moon mission on Wednesday following in the footsteps of rival China, as the emerging Asian power celebrated its space ambitions and scientific prowess.

Chandrayaan-1 (Moon vehicle), a cuboid spacecraft built by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) blasted off from a southern Indian space center shortly after dawn in a boost for the country's ambitions to gain more global space business.

"What we have started is a remarkable journey," G Madhavan Nair, chairman of ISRO, told reporters.

The operation is ostensibly about mapping the moon, but the mission comes on the heels of China's first space walk last month, when Chinese astronauts were feted as national heroes.

India does not want to fall behind in an Asian race to space that could have technological and military implications. There is disquiet in the West that China has military ambitions in space, with developments like anti-satellite missiles.

India's national television channels broadcast the countdown to the launch live. Some scientists thumped their chests, hugged each other and clapped as the rocket shot up into space.

Greeted with patriotism in the media, the launch appeared to have distracted India from an economic slowdown, collapsing stock prices and outbreaks of ethnic and religious violence.

Perhaps remarkably in a nation where hundreds of millions of people live in poverty and millions of children are malnourished, the cost of the mission has scarcely been questioned.

"Destination Moon ... Historic Day For India" blazed one TV channel on its screen.

Barring any technical failure, the spacecraft will reach the lunar orbit and spend two years scanning the moon for any evidence of water and precious metals.

A gadget called the Moon Impactor Probe will detach and land on the moon to kick up some dust, while instruments in the craft analyze the particles, ISRO says.

A principal objective is to look for Helium 3, an isotope which is very rare on earth but is sought to power nuclear fusion and could be a valuable source of energy in the future, some scientists believe.

It is thought to be more plentiful on the moon, but still rare and very difficult to extract.

India's project cost $79 million, considerably less than the Chinese and Japanese probes in 2007 and ISRO says the moon mission will pave the way for India to claim a bigger chunk of the global space business.

ISRO scientists visited temples to seek the blessings of Hindu gods before the launch, and afterwards some expressed relief that rain had held off until the rocket was in space.

"The rain gods have been kind to us," Madhavan said.

FROM NUCLEAR POWER TO SPACE POWER

For many proud Indians, the launch is another notch in the country's global ambitions. India recently signed a civil nuclear deal with the United States, making it a de facto nuclear power.

"I'm very proud," said Sunil Tambe, a taxi driver in Mumbai. "It means India can do these big projects and I think it will also benefit us because there will be more information and we can learn new things."

In April, India sent 10 satellites into orbit from a single rocket, and ISRO says it is plans more launches before a proposed manned mission to space and then onto Mars in four years time.

"With China forging ahead in the space field, India cannot afford to lag far behind," wrote security analyst Ajey Lele in The Indian Express.

ISRO is collaborating with a number of countries, including Israel on a project to carry an ultra-violet telescope in an Indian satellite within a year.

It is also building a tropical weather satellite with France, collaborating with Japan to improve disaster management from space, and developing a heavy lift satellite launcher, which it hopes to use to launch heavier satellites by 2010.

India has launched 10 remote sensing satellites since 1998, has several broadcast satellites in space to control 170 transponders and has also launched light-weight satellites for Belgium, Germany, Korea, Japan and France

Greenhouse gas 4 times higher than thought

Levels of a powerful greenhouse gas are four times as high as previously thought, according to new measurements released on Thursday.

New analytical techniques show that about 5,400 metric tons of nitrogen trifluoride are in the atmosphere, with amounts increasing by about 11 percent per year.

Ray Weiss of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, and colleagues said it had not been possible to accurately measure this gas before.

They said nitrogen trifluoride is 17,000 times more effective at warming the atmosphere than an equal mass of carbon dioxide, although it does not yet contribute much to global warming.

Previous estimates had put levels of the gas at less than 1,200 metric tons in 2006.

Nitrogen trifluoride, a colorless, odorless, nonflammable gas, is used to etch silicon wafers and in some lasers.

Writing in Geophysical Research Letters, Weiss and colleagues said they analyzed air samples gathered over the past 30 years under the NASA-funded Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment.

Weiss said nitrogen trifluoride needs to be regulated, as carbon dioxide is.

"From a climate perspective, there is a need to add nitrogen trifluoride to the suite of greenhouse gases whose production is inventoried and whose emissions are regulated under the Kyoto Protocol, thus providing meaningful incentives for its wise use," he said.

Michael Prather, an atmospheric chemist at the University of California at Irvine, noted nitrogen trifluoride is being used more commonly and predicted that more would be found in the atmosphere.

"It is now shown to be an important greenhouse gas," Prather, who was not involved with the Scripps study, said in a statement. "Now we need to get hard numbers on how much is flowing through the system, from production to disposal.

India is failing to provide basic healthcare to its poorest children despite robust economic growth, underlining a widening gap between rich and poor across the Asia-Pacific region, the United Nations said on Tuesday. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said cutting child mortality depended on India and China, which together accounted for almost a third of all child deaths worldwide in 2006. India is among 13 countries in the Asia-Pacific which are struggling to reduce child mortality rates by two thirds, one of the so-called health-related Millennium Goals the United Nations set to achieve by 2015, UNICEF said in a new report. "India needs more political will and needs to strengthen its healthcare delivery to the poorest of the poor who are not being reached," Daniel Toole, UNICEF's regional director of South Asia, said in New Delhi. In 2006, 2.1 million children under five years old died in India -- the biggest number after China. India is the second most populous nation in the world and UNICEF said global efforts to improve child survival would fail unless it does better. "India is a key to the process of improvement and if India fails, the world fails," Toole said after releasing "The State of Asia Pacific's Children 2008" report. India's infant mortality rate stood at 57 per 1,000 live births last year. The country's health officials have announced they would bring that rate down to around 30 per 1,000 live births within the next four years. South Asia was also falling behind rest of the world with only 1.1 percent of gross domestic product allocated to health care, UNICEF said. Experts say many of the two-thirds of Indians living in rural areas do not have access to basic medical facilities, despite the country achieving 9 percent economic growth. Around 65 percent of Indian women still give birth at home. UNICEF says there is an urgent need for drugs, doctors, nutrition and education for poor women and children. "There is a tremendous level of growth, but the actual disparity between the rich and the poor is increasing," Toole said. One out of every three women in India is also underweight, putting them at risk of delivering low birth-weight babies. These babies are 20 times more likely to die in infancy, according to UNICEF. Healthcare facilities in India and the Asia-Pacific region was also hampered by corruption, Toole said.

Trailers for "Half-Blood Prince" began running last week in advance of the expected November movie release worldwide. Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc, said it had decided to make the change to bolster its release schedule for the lucrative summer moviegoing season -- a period that can account for as much as 40 percent of Hollywood's annual box office receipts. Warner Bros. President Alan Horn said the studio was also still feeling repercussions from the three-month Hollywood screenwriters strike that ended in February but has "impacted the readiness of scripts for other films." Sweet fruit drinks found to lead to diabetes

Sweetened fruit drinks are often marketed as a healthier alternative to non-diet soft drinks but are just as likely to cause weight gain and increase the risk of diabetes, researchers said on Monday. "The public should be made aware that these drinks are not a healthy alternative to soft drinks with regard to risk of type 2 diabetes," Julie Palmer and colleagues at Boston University wrote in their report, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, is closely linked to obesity and has become more common worldwide. The findings came from a look at nearly 44,000 black women in the United States who were checked from 1995 through 2005. Those who said they drank two or more non-diet soft drinks a day had a 24 percent increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes than those in the study who drank fewer than one regular soft drink per month, the research team said. Women who drank two or more sweetened fruit drinks per day had a 31 percent increased risk compared to those who drank fewer than one such fruit drink a month. Diet soft drinks, grapefruit juice and orange juice were not linked to a higher diabetes risk, the researchers said. While pure orange and grapefruit juices also contain sugars naturally, they may have a different metabolic effect or may be more likely to be consumed as part of a meal, the investigators said. Soft drinks and sweetened juices are often consumed between meals and may lead to snacking, they said. An earlier study involving thousands of white women also linked diabetes to both soft drinks and sweetened juices, the report said. Another study in the same journal found that eating fruits and vegetables seems to ward off type 2 diabetes, perhaps by preventing obesity or providing protective nutrients, including antioxidants. A third study found that a low-fat diet does not seem to change the risk of diabetes. "The common denominator that appears clear is that calories trump everything," Dr. Mark Feinglos of the Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina wrote in a commentary in the same issue. "And certain nutrients, like high fructose corn syrup, make it easier to overeat," he added. "If you keep the calories low, you can probably eat almost anything, which is what the low-carb diets show us. Specific metabolic issues aside, an important reason that low carb works is because you don't eat a lot of calories."

A military shooting demonstration in south-east France has left 16 people wounded, after real bullets were used instead of blanks.
Four of the wounded are in a critical condition, including a young child.
A Defence Ministry official said the incident occurred during a demonstration of hostage-freeing techniques at a barracks in Aude.
The soldier who fired the shots has been detained. It is not clear why the wrong ammunition was used.
Reports from the scene say the hostage scenario had been acted out five times before a crowd at the Laperrine military barracks, near Carcassonne, when on the sixth take real bullets began flying through the air, and onlookers fell to the ground.
In a statement, French President Nicolas Sarkozy expressed his horror at the incident and said he was urgently waiting for the results of an official investigation.
A regional official, Bernard Lemaire, told France 3 radio that it is thought the incident was accidental but that foul play has not been ruled out.
"The question being asked is 'Did the soldier engage in a criminal act or not?'," Mr Lemaire said.
"For now, no-one can answer that, but the theory being worked on is one of error," he added.
The critically injured victims were taken to hospital in Toulouse.
